A article in the Post- Tribune in Northwest Indiana - reports that a once empty lot will be turned into a self-storage business.
Work has begun on building a storage facility , which will be 50,000 square feet.
The project is located just north of the Canadian National railroad tracks and east of Calumet, behind Martinis.
Craig Phillips, city planner, said he isn't sure what used to be there but believes an ice company used to be located just south of the property that Katz is building on.
The area has been vacant, except for a few empty buildings, since Phillips has been with the city, he said.
"I would say it's probably one of the underdeveloped areas of the city," he said.
The site used to be industrial, including a railroad maintenance yard, so the storage company is a significant change.
The article also mentions that most other storage facilities in the area are full.
