Point of Sales insurance vetoe

Inside self storage reports that the New York Governor David Paterson last week vetoed a bill that would have made it easier for self-storage operators to offer point-of-sale tenant insurance with in New York.

The Department of Insurance raised concerns about other laws that might be affected by the proposed measure and disputed the proposed effective date. The rejection came even though the national Self Storage Association and New York Self Storage Association had addressed the issues with the department, and the bill had already passed the state Assembly and Senate.

Senate Bill 3477 would have amended the insurance law, authorizing the issuance of limited licenses to self-storage operators and allowing them to sell insurance coverage on personal property stored in self-storage units. Similar legislation has been passed in 10 other states, including California, Florida, Illinois, Texas and Washington.

A article in the Post- Tribune in Northwest Indiana - reports that a once empty lot will be turned into a self-storage business.

Work has begun on building a storage facility , which will be 50,000 square feet.

The project is located just north of the Canadian National railroad tracks and east of Calumet, behind Martinis.

Craig Phillips, city planner, said he isn't sure what used to be there but believes an ice company used to be located just south of the property that Katz is building on.

The area has been vacant, except for a few empty buildings, since Phillips has been with the city, he said.

"I would say it's probably one of the underdeveloped areas of the city," he said.

The site used to be industrial, including a railroad maintenance yard, so the storage company is a significant change.

The article also mentions that most other storage facilities in the area are full.
